Introduction, advantages, and challenges of sapphire mobile phone glass screens

We know that sapphire is an expensive natural gemstone, so is sapphire screen made from this natural gemstone? In fact, sapphire screens are made by purifying ordinary gemstones, which basically do not display blue, but have extremely high hardness.
Sapphire screen technology has actually been around for some time, such as the glass used in TAG Heuer watches and military vehicles. Sapphire's hardness is second only to diamond, and technology manufacturers can achieve better hardness performance than traditional chemically reinforced glass by purifying its elements and applying them to some transparent glass panels.

It is reported that Apple has acquired a sapphire product company. This move not only means that the iPhone 6 may adopt a sapphire screen material, but also may push this screen technology into the mainstream.
What are the benefits of it for mobile phones?
Sapphire has been in production for some time now, and all watches from the Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer, as well as transparent armor for military vehicles, have already used this material. The reason behind this is also very reasonable.
As is well known, diamonds are the hardest substance in nature, with a Mohs hardness rating of 10.
By measuring the susceptibility of different minerals to scratches, the Mohs hardness scale will give a rating of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest.

Why didn't you use sapphire on your phone before?
For the mobile phone industry, sapphire is no longer a completely new thing. Some mobile phone products have already used this material as a screen, but mainly for high-end products, such as some Vertu models. At the same time, Apple has actually used this material: the sapphire that protects the iPhone 5 and 5s lenses, and the 5s Touch ID fingerprint sensor is also covered with sapphire.
So iPhone will sell more expensive?
A reasonable assumption is that sapphire screens will increase the price of the new generation iPhone, unless Apple comes up with a way to absorb the additional costs or produce enough volume to reduce costs.
Recently, Apple bought out the three-year supply of GTAdvanced, presumably to reduce the production cost of sapphire. GTAdvanced's technology can produce sapphire substrates thinner than a human hair, which can be mounted on glass display screens. This approach can significantly reduce the production cost of sapphire screens.
This $578 million transaction will also allow GT to purchase nearly 1000 furnaces to produce sapphire screens, further reducing production costs.
The dilemma of sapphire mobile phone screens
A major issue currently troubling sapphire is the purple glare that occurs in bright areas when taking photos with the iPhone 5 camera, which is caused by the sapphire lens.
If the iPhone adopts a sapphire screen, then screen brightness will also become another critical issue. If the brightness is not up to standard, iPhone outdoor use becomes a problem.
If the thickness of the sapphire substrate attached to the screen glass is reduced, this problem should be effectively solved. Meanwhile, brighter screen technologies such as AMOLED can also compensate for it.
So will we see an iPhone 6 with an AMOLED panel and sapphire screen, while increasing its size to 5 inches? Let's keep waiting.
